Rainwater Harvesting

For a while we have thought about how we can make small changes to our farming practises which will make a big difference. Having big barns on the farm means that we have a lot of rainwater pouring down our guttering whenever there is a big rainfall. It seems a frustrating waste when you consider the sprayer we use on the farm holds 4000litres of water when full! Not to mention the water we use for the sheep, washing down equipment amongst other things.

So, back in February, after watching several youtube videos of how to install and effectively use a rainwater harvester we decided to order one and erect it ourselves next to the main farm buildings.

Over the last few months we have installed it and put pipework in place to allow for overflow as well as collection of rainwater. We’re really pleased to have it in place, even more so, because our usual water tank decided to spring a leak shortly after we purchased this one! So, you have us to thank for these rainy days because while you thought Spring was on it’s way, we were praying for a bit of rain to see how this coped with it and to encourage our grass and crops to grow!
